A groundbreaking facility designed and constructed with intention behind every decision, the crown jewels of the Center for Health & Wellbeing (CHWB) are the seven 6-foot resin-and-terrazzo medallions placed in the Commons’ terrazzo floor. Immensely intricate in detail and deliberate in their design, the medallions were created by Keri Caffrey, a local artist and Rollins College Fine Arts graduate who has worked with the Winter Park Health Foundation for more than two decades.

This month, The National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association, Inc. (NTMA) recognized the medallions with its 2020 Honor Award. The NTMA’s Honor Awards are given annually to outstanding projects across the United States that use terrazzo materials and mosaic design. The team at CHWB worked with Caffrey as artist, Jack Jennings & Sons as contractors, architects from Duda | Paine, and Terrazzo Contractors from David Allen Company in Raleigh, N.C., to bring the medallions to life.

From the NTMA’s Honor Award Announcement:

“This health center integrates the realms of fitness, medicine, and wellness. This installation demonstrates the versatility of epoxy terrazzo as an artistic medium, with six medallions in 30 colors, set to advantage against a muted floor and rich woodwork. Intricate strip work went into the medallions, which take inspiration from the Seven Dimensions of Wellbeing and are both striking art pieces and symbols to orient visitors and reinforce branding. Black PVC divider strips provide maximum contrast between the vibrant resin colors. The steps incorporating metal inlay lettering consist of two-piece precast terrazzo.”

The medallions are both stimulating art pieces and functional way-finders. The medallion that relates to physical wellbeing features lush greens and vibrant fruits and is steps outside Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen. The medallion reflecting social wellbeing, alive with buzzing bees working together, has been placed near the Community Conference Center; the medallion illustrating physical wellbeing is located near the Peggy & Philip B. Crosby Wellness Center. The collection of seven medallions gives visitors clues into their potential as healthy, whole members of their community, and into the Center’s mission.

Learn more about the medallions here.

We’re all living longer, so the question is: how do we minimize the years we spend in ill health? What can you do today in order to live a good life as opposed to just a long life.

Colin Milner, the CEO of the International Council on Active Aging, explains how the Center for Health & Wellbeing will help you on that journey to a long and healthy life.

Join the healthy living revolution!

I think that we are literally at the start of a quality-of-life revolution, and I don’t use that term lightly, because what it’s about today. It’s not about longevity; we know that we’re going to live longer, but we will live longer and better if we improve our quality of life. So it’s how do we minimize the years that we spend in ill-health so that whatever our life span is it’s actually all about having a good life as opposed to a long life. I believe that the Winter Park Foundation’s new building actually has the potential to change the way we age by transforming not only the way we view aging but the way we actually live by providing you vibrant services that up until this time haven’t been available in your local community.

I think what’s happening is it we’re morphing right now the old model of senior centers where people used to go in congregate and socialized to one now such as the Winter Park Foundation’s new building, where it’s all about revolution. It’s all about embracing technologies, and embracing you information, and bracing the possibilities and the Center like that is literally shaking the foundation of society.

And it’s not just for older people..

I’s certainly not just for older people, it’s about generations coming together, it’s about continuity throughout society as opposed to exclusion and elitism

On December 14  the Winter Park Health Foundation and Florida Hospital celebrated a significant construction milestone at the Center for Health & Wellbeing. Which will be the most innovative and comprehensive facility of its kind in Central Florida.

The 80,000-square-foot Center for Health & Wellbeing is designed to provide comprehensive services. As well as, opportunities for whole-person, whole-community care. Moreover, a top priority for both the Winter Park Health Foundation and its partner Florida Hospital.

Representatives from both organizations joined Duda|Paine Architects and Jack Jennings & Sons for the ‘topping out’ ceremony, marking that the building has reached its highest point. Crews hoisted a tree — decorated by attendees with ornaments representing wellness, fitness, and medicine — atop the structure.

“This is an exciting day for not just the Winter Park Health Foundation, our partners and the teams that are building this stunning facility, but most importantly — our entire community,” said Patricia Maddox, president, and CEO of the Winter Park Health Foundation. “We are one major step closer to helping our community make their health — physical, emotional and spiritual — a top priority.”

The Center for Health & Wellbeing, located near Winter Park Memorial Hospital on Mizell Avenue, will focus on three areas: wellness, fitness, and medicine. Moreover, the heart of the facility will be “The Commons,” which will include a healthy café. As well as a conference center for educational classes and other activities.

The center’s wellness offerings will also include:

  • A “Nutrition Theater,” where activities such as cooking demonstrations will occur
  • Children’s wellness/childcare
  • Healthy Living Experience
  • Outdoor gardens, terrace with patio seating and indoor and outdoor walking paths

The fitness component will feature an all-new Peggy & Philip B. Crosby Wellness Center, which includes:

  • Natatorium with two pools: a dedicated lap pool, and one for warm-water therapy and aquatic exercise
  • Multipurpose fitness rooms for group exercise classes and yoga
  • Modern fitness floor featuring the latest in equipment for cardio exercise and weight training

  • Sports medicine and rehabilitation
  • Retail pharmacy
  • Specialty and primary care physician offices
  • Outpatient lab
  • Chronic condition management and education
  • Massage and acupuncture services

“The Center for Health & Wellbeing is not just a building, but a place that will facilitate health in an innovative way,” said Jennifer Wandersleben, administrator of Winter Park Memorial Hospital. “Florida Hospital has partnered with the Winter Park Health Foundation for nearly two decades and we are thrilled to bring these state-of-the-art health and wellness services to Central Florida, and make this one of the healthiest communities in the nation.”

The Winter Park Health Foundation (WPHF), working in partnership with Growing Bolder,  is putting the finishing touches on creation of the Wellbeing Network (WBN).  The first phase of the WBN will launch early 2018 when its website introduces “channels” for each of the seven dimensions of wellbeing: physical, intellectual, environmental, vocational, social, emotional, and spiritual. Each channel will include both audio and video stories that feature individuals whose actions embody one or more of the dimensions.

In preparation for the launch, Growing Bolder has interviewed well-known health and wellness experts, impassioned national leaders, and inspirational local older adults, all who are willing to share their knowledge, challenges, and successes. In addition to these stories, the website will also serve as a repository of the latest information on the development and projected opening of the Center for Health & Wellbeing (CHWB).

The second phase of the WBN will focus on sharing CHWB programming with the community.  When it opens late 2018, the CHWB will be home to the WBN with Growing Bolder operating from a studio within the new facility to produce and share inspirational stories about community members who are practicing healthy living and positive aging; as well as videos that capture advice and tips from experts providing education and services at the CHWB.

“Growing Bolder has been a fantastic partner for the Winter Park Health Foundation.  From the start, they have shared our vision for both the WBN and CHWB.  We are thrilled with the quality of their work and believe that their continued engagement in these efforts is a win for us, for them, and for the community,” said Diana Silvey, WPHF VP for CHWB Programming.

On Thursday, August 17, leaders from the Winter Park Health Foundation and Florida Hospital came together for a beam signing ceremony on the construction site of the Center for Health & Wellbeing in Winter Park. They were joined by representatives from the Center’s architect (Duda|Paine) and general contractor (Jack Jennings & Sons) who also made their mark by signing one of the beams, which will soon be put into place within the new 79,000 sq. ft. facility.

The Winter Park Health Foundation is the developer and co-owner of the Center for Health & Wellbeing. Earlier this year, the Foundation announced Florida Hospital would be a partner in the project as co-owner and provider of medical services. When the Center opens in late 2018, it will be the home of an all-new Peggy & Philip B. Crosby Wellness Center (which has been serving the community since 1989). In addition, The Center will feature a wide variety of programs to help empower members of the community to be healthier and full of vitality.

Every element of the new facility was intentionally designed to enhance the neighborhood. The mission-driven architecture draws its inspiration from the healing power of nature, transforming the 4.2-acre site into a series of gardens and a natural light-filled, central building surrounded by walking paths. According to Turan Duda, FAIA of Duda|Paine Architects, “the Center for Health & Wellbeing is not just a building, but a place designed to be experienced and to facilitate interactions between Wellness, Fitness and Medicine.
